The Committee of the British-Lithuanian Society

The Committee meets four times a year in addition to the Annual General Meeting and comprises eleven members including two new Lithuanian professionals, four from Lithuanian émigré families and five British.

What Does the Society Do?
The Society arranges a varied programme of talks, lectures and concerts, as well as social activities. Talks and lectures are given by experts in their field. A number of the Society’s events are held at the Lithuanian Embassy in London, where members and their guests may continue the evening over wine, Lithuanian beer and refreshments.
Recent events have included:

  • A private tour of Parliament conducted by Dr Roger Berry MP (Co-chair of the All-party Parliamentary Lithuania Group and member of the British-Lithuanian Society).

  • A private party at the Tower of London incorporating a conducted tour and viewing of the Ceremony of the Keys.

  • A talk by Dr Peter Duncan, Senior Lecturer in Russian Politics, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London, on ‘Putin’s Policies in the Baltic States and the CIS countries’.
  • A book launch together with the Lithuanian Embassy for the English-language edition of The Hurricane Captain at the Royal Air Force Club in Piccadilly, London. The book is a biography of Lithuanian pilot Flight Lieutenant Romualdas Marcinkus (1907–1944) who served as a Hurricane pilot in the British Royal Air Force.
  • A talk at the Lithuanian Embassy by PC Gary Pettengell, winner of the Pride of Lithuania Award 2007. PC Gary Pettengell who serves with the Norfolk Constabulary  launched the multilingual (English, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese and Russian) website www.welcometonorfolk.org.uk to help people from overseas to settle and work in Norfolk. 

  • A talk at the Lithuanian Embassy by foreign correspondent Edward Lucas of The Economist, formerly of The Independent, on ‘Lithuania: cold water and hot politics’.
  • A recital by Royal Opera Covent Garden mezzo-soprano Liora Grodnikaitė at St Mary’s Church in Paddington, London.
